Comrade Bhai Satha – A Life Dedicated to the People
Comrade Bhai Satha was a visionary freedom fighter, social reformer, and public leader who devoted his entire life to freedom, social justice, equality, and the empowerment of ordinary people.
While studying at Fergusson College, Pune, he responded to Mahatma Gandhi’s call for the freedom struggle and chose to leave his education to serve the nation. He actively participated in the major movements of 1930, 1932, and 1942, facing imprisonment on several occasions.
Inspired by Gandhi’s vision of national education, Bhai Satha played a leading role in establishing the Rashtriya Shikshan Mandal and Rashtriya Pathshala in Ahmednagar. The institution became more than a centre of education—it became a source of inspiration for young people, nurturing patriotism, self-reliance, and social responsibility.
His commitment to social equality led him to establish Dalit Dost Dal and hostels for underprivileged students. He also started the Mohan Mudra printing press to support the freedom movement and spread nationalist literature and ideas.
Bhai Satha believed that service to society was a lifelong responsibility. After studying homeopathy, he ran a free dispensary for nearly four decades, providing healthcare to thousands of people, particularly those who could not afford treatment.
After Independence, his struggle for justice continued. He worked closely with workers, farmers, landless labourers, and marginalized communities, launched the weekly Inquilab, and actively participated in movements against drought, exploitation, and inequality. He was also a prominent participant in the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement and was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly in 1957.
Known for his simple lifestyle, humility, integrity, and fearless commitment to truth, Bhai Satha remained detached from personal recognition. He chose to remain unmarried, believing that “the nation was his family and public service his life’s mission.”
Comrade Bhai Satha’s life stands as an inspiring legacy of national service, social equality, education, and people’s movements. From the freedom struggle to the fight for the rights of workers and farmers, he dedicated himself to building a more just and humane society.
His life continues to inspire generations as a remarkable example of selfless service and commitment to the people.
